Why attend Saint Michael School (SMS)?
Saint Michael School is an extension of the teaching ministry of the Catholic Church. We base our philosophy of education on the fundamental dignity and the uniqueness of the individual as created by God. We affirm a Catholic education encompasses the whole of human life. We endeavor to foster the growth of the children in our care. We hope to instill Christian values and a sense of community, to enable the students to achieve academic success and social well-being.

Is SMS an accredited school?
Yes, SMS is fully accredited by WCEA/WASC.

Are the teachers credentialed?
Teachers at SMS are fully credentialed, and we take pride in retaining qualified teachers with low turnover.

How many days a year do students attend class?
Similar to the public schools, students attend classes 180 days a year.

What is the average class size?
There are approximately 300 students in attendance with an average of 33 students per class. During enrichment sessions, class sizes are reduced to under 20 students.

What grades attend SMS?
K - 8.

What about the curriculum?
SMS focuses on Catholic values presented in our religious education program and we follow the California's state curriculum based guidelines for grades K - 8. In addition to our core focus, we provide enrichment and art activities, special resource activities, P.E., and also both Literature and English programs for our middle school students.

Is there after school care?
Yes, extended care is available daily before and after school; additional fee.

How much is tuition?
Tuition varies by the number of children attending. Exact amounts are available in the school office. Financial aid is also available on a limited basis.

How do you handle discipline at SMS?
At SMS, we are firm but loving in our response to misbehavior. We adhere to our student learning expectations and expect students to act in a respectful and honest manner.

Does SMS offer First Communion preparation?
Yes, our first and second grade students prepare for First Communion as a whole class

How old must SMS students be to start kindergarten?
Students must be 4 years, 9 months by Sep. 1 of the school year.

Does SMS offer physical education?
Yes, SMS has P.E. for all grades, as well as a zero period that provides a recreation fitness opportunity, before school, for all interested students.

Do students wear uniforms?
Yes, students are required to wear uniforms but do have free dress days during the school year.

What is the parent involvement like at SMS?
Parents are instrumental to the success of SMS with their generous participation in the volunteer programs like: PTG, school board and other classroom opportunities.

How often do SMS students attend mass?
SMS students attend mass on a monthly basis, and each grade is responsible for planning one liturgy a year.
